What to Pack for a Cozy and Relaxing Winter Getaway to Budapest

In January 2019, I ventured to Budapest right after New Year’s in Prague, and it quickly became one of my favorite trips. There’s something magical about the city in winter—fewer tourists, no long lines, just peaceful streets and cozy cafes. I instantly fell in love with the thermal baths, which were such a relaxing escape from the cold. I also had a blast hunting down quirky thrift stores, finding amazing local cuisine, and marveling at the stunning architecture.

But, of course, packing was a struggle. I made the rookie mistake of bringing both carry-ons and checked bags, thinking I’d be prepared for anything. Let’s just say, dragging them through Budapest’s cobbled streets was not the vibe. Lesson learned. But only kinda lol. Can’t say I have fully learned that lesson.

Now, I’m really looking forward to going back, this time with Barry. I can’t wait to show him all the hidden spots I discovered and relive the magic of the city’s baths, thrift stores, and stunning architecture.

We are heading to Budapest this January for our anniversary, and I’ve been putting together the ultimate packing list. Since this trip is all about slowing down, soaking in thermal baths, and enjoying the city’s cozy winter vibes, I’m keeping it functional, comfy, and stylish. Here’s everything I’m packing to make sure we’re ready for a relaxed, romantic vacation.

Clothing Essentials

Budapest in January is cold, so layers are key. I’m sticking to a mix of cozy and practical pieces, with a few dressy options for date nights.

  • Tops:
    • 1 thermal/waffle knit (perfect for layering)
    • 1 mockneck
    • 2 sweaters (warm and cute!)
    • 1 graphic tee for lounging
    • 1 hoodie for extra warmth
  • Bottoms:
    • 1 pair of light wash jeans
    • 1 pair of black jeans
    • 2 pairs of leggings (ideal for travel days or layering)
    • 1 pair of sweatpants (because comfort is life)
    • 1 skirt or dress for a special date night
  • Outerwear:
    • 1 trench coat for a polished look
    • 1 warmer jacket (still deciding if I will bring two or just one jacket, but it needs to handle Budapest’s chilly January weather)
  • Shoes:
    • Chelsea Doc Martens (perfect for walking and keeping warm)
    • Vans for casual outings
    • Sandals for the thermal baths

Accessories to Stay Warm

The key to surviving winter in Budapest is bundling up!

  • Knit hat, scarf, and gloves
  • Biker and baseball caps for style options
  • A cozy knit headband or Russian-style hat for extra flair (I got a black rabbit fur russian-style hat at the christmas market in 2019 in Prague and I am obsessed with it still)
  • Sunglasses (even winter days can be bright)
  • Jewelry for a little sparkle on date nights – my favorite pair right now are from Chan Luu: Mizumi Earrings Abalone I got them for my 30th birthday

Thermal Bath Must-Haves

Since we’ll be spending a lot of time at the baths, I’m making sure to pack:

  • 2 swimsuits (so one can completely dry before having to wear it again)
  • Sandals for walking around the bathhouses
  • A lightweight cover-up
  • A compact towel (the airbnb should have them, but the bathhouses require you bring your own so good to bring just in case)

Toiletries

I’m keeping my skincare and beauty routine simple but effective for the winter air:

  • Witch hazel and face lotion to combat dryness
  • Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
  • Dry shampoo
  • Makeup essentials for a polished yet low-effort look
  • A good body scrub to pair with those post-sauna feels

Electronics

Staying connected and entertained is a must:

Easy Grab Bag

This is my go-to for travel days:

  • Wallet and passport
  • A neck pillow and eye mask for the plane
  • A book to read while lounging
  • Gluten-free snacks because you never know when hunger will strike

Miscellaneous Must-Haves

Lastly, I’m packing a few extras to make the trip even more special:

  • Film camera for capturing all the vibes and memories
  • Tripod for easy couple photos
  • A deck of cards for cozy nights in
  • Anniversary wine from our Portugal trip
  • Tot bag for bringing thing to and from the spa’s or grocery

Packing Tips for Budapest in Winter

  1. Layers are Your Best Friend: Thermal baths are warm, but the streets of Budapest will remind you it’s January.
  2. Comfortable Shoes Are Key: Even with a relaxed itinerary, walking around is inevitable, so pack shoes you can live in.
  3. Pack Light, But Smart: Budapest has plenty of charm, so leave space in your suitcase for souvenirs or unique finds.

This packing list has me feeling all set and super excited for a slow, cozy adventure in one of Europe’s most stunning cities. Leave a comment below if you think anything needs to be added to the list as a must have!
